One of the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is quality education. Digital technologies have emerged as an essential tool to achieve this goal (Abid Haleem et al., 2022). Globally, there has been an increase in the development of new technologies called innovations. In the educational sector, these innovations may come in the form of e-learning, artificial intelligence, e-assessment, gamification, cloud computing, and many other digital technology-based techniques in instructional delivery and assessment (Aldosari, 2020).
In our ever-evolving world, education is not only important but also necessity because it is a beacon of opportunity and advancement. It is not merely a process of acquiring knowledge but a transformative journey that empowers individuals, drives societal progress, and fosters innovations. The importance of education in the twenty-first century can be attributed to its function in educating and preparing people for a world that is changing rapidly due to the advancement of technology. However, many developing nations and underdeveloped nations, such as Nigeria, do not really embrace the pragmatic adoption of these innovations in their education systems (Ridwan et al., 2019). As such, this article will seek to explore the relevance of tech in education.
In today’s fast-evolving space, technology has strengthened the interactive tools to online sources; technology has become a cornerstone of modern education, profoundly reshaping the way students study, teachers teach, and the methods teachers and students use in engaging with knowledge. The use of technology in education is to enhance learning, teaching, and administration in educational settings, and as we navigate this era of technological advancement, understanding the needs and impact of technology in education is crucial for preparing students for a future that is increasingly interconnected and digitally driven. For instance, the sudden emergence of COVID-19 exposed the need to incorporate technologically driven learning into our educational system (Edna et al., 2022).
Furthermore, imagine a class where all students have instant access to a vast amount of information, highly interactive courses, and instructions tailored to each individual’s needs. This is not a far-off fantasy but a reality, all thanks to technology. As the world around us becomes increasingly digital, tech integration in education is becoming more essential; it is no longer an improvement but a necessity because tech enhances learning experiences. Learning experiences through digital tools like educational apps,
interactive whiteboards, video conferencing, online discussion forums, etc. have transformed traditional lessons into interactive lessons. Technology has exposed students to a big volume of information. Hence, with the help of technology, no longer will students have to depend on textbooks and lectures to learn, but rather they will be able to access academic journals, online courses, and instruction videos from any part of the world. And it is this bulk volume of information that has allowed learners to take topics deeper and at their own speed, hence making education more personalized. Technology integration into the process of education would give students far-reaching possibilities to practice crucial skills for the labour market, such as coding, data analysis, mastering digital tools, and online communication skills used by so many professions.
The use of technology in education will help equip students with essential skills for the modern job market, like coding, data analysis, digital tools, online communication skills, etc., which are becoming increasingly important in various professions. By incorporating technology into the curriculum, educational establishments prepare students not only to use these tools but also to innovate, create, and adjust in a quickly changing technological environment. Tech has made learning easier, accessible, and flexible for students through digital tools that ensure students can interact with instructional materials irrespective of their physical location. This means that students can have access to online materials that allow for instant and convenient communication over a long distance at the click of a button. Learners can learn at their own speed and revisit materials when necessary.
Similarly, it brings flexibility to education, where students and concerned stakeholders in education can learn at their own pace. Modern technologies provide this window in order to enhance and get educational resources at your own convenience and, in the long run, achieve SDG 4. I found out that the most powerful use of technology in education is when it opens up learning opportunities for all students using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (CAST Inc., 2012). This is a huge benefit for those who cannot attend in-person classes due to geographical, health, and personal constraints. Engagement is key to effective learning, and tech offers innovative ways like multimedia content to capture students’ attention and motivate them. By incorporating elements of play and creativity, technology can transform challenging subjects into exciting adventures, keeping students motivated and invested in their education.
By and large, it should be noted that the relevance of technology in education is undeniable. It enhances accessibility, personalises learning, expands resource availability, prepares students for future careers, and supports educators. As technology continues to evolve, its role in education will become integral, influencing education in ways that we can only begin to imagine. Embracing technological advancements in education is not merely an option but necessary for creating a more engaging and effective educational experience.
